Welcome to Tokushima

Tokushima Prefecture, on the eastern side of the
island of Shikoku, is connected to mainland Japan
by the Akashi-Kaikyo and Naruto Bridges, and can
be reached from Osaka in two and a half hours by
highway bus. Tokushima is home of the
world-famous Awa Dance festival and abounds in
beautiful natural scenery.

Tokushima City Awa Dance
(August 12 to 15)

The Awa Dance (Awa Odori) is Tokushima's largest
annual event and boasts a history of over 400
years. The festival is well established in various
areas even outside the prefecture, and Awa Dance
troupes are regularly invited to events outside of
Japan, placing it alongside the Rio Carnivale as
one of the largest dance event in the world.

The Awa Dance is also held in Naruto, Miyoshi,
Yoshinogawa, Tsurugi-cho and many other cities
and towns throughout the prefecture.
@Tokushima City Mt. Bizan

Mt. Bizan is the symbol of Tokushima City. It
overlooks the whole area, and on clear days you
can see out to Awaji Island to the north and the
Kii Peninsula to the east. The base of the ropeway
is at Sanroku Station on the 5th floor of the Awa
Odori Kaikan.。
AThe Whirlpools of Naruto

The Naruto Straits, between the city of Naruto
and Awaji Island is where the Seto Inland Sea
meets the Kii Channel. The straits of Naruto are
amongst the three most dramatic in the world,
standing alongside the Straits of Messina between
Sicily and the Italian Peninsula, and the Seymour
Narrows of Vancouver Island in Canada. The
difference in height between tides here can reach
1.5m, with the currents moving at 15 to 20km/h.
This generates countless whirlpools of various
sizes ranging up to 20m in diameter. You won't want
to miss these whirlpools, a true wonder of nature
and some of the largest in the world. The best
time to see the whirlpools is one and a half hours
around the high or low tides. Prime viewing
season is during tides in spring and autumn.
BOhama-Kaigan, Minami-cho(Sea Turtle)

Every year , large numbers of sea turtles come
ashore at Ohama beach to lay their eggs. At
the right time of year , visitors can see eggs
being laid or baby turtles hatching.

CNaruto Deutsches Haus

Built on the site of a relocation camp where
German prisoners of WWI lived for three years,
the Deutsches Haus displays mementos of their
daily life, tools, and cultural objects. The soldiers
interacted with the local community and formed
an orchestra that presented the first performance
in Japan of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
